Google Trends

While I don’t remember the exact percentage, i believe Google now controls over 60% of searches done around the world. Using google trends, which is now updated daily on the hour, we can see what the hundreds of millions of google users are searching for. I don’t know about you, but I see this as a treasure trove of valuable information hiding in plain sight. After all, these searches represent the collective conscience of a majority of American. What marketer wouldn’t want this information?

Lets look at some of today’s top 100 searches and see what we can infer from it. The movie 27 dresses is one of today’s big search items, with the exact keywords being “27 dresses sneak preview”. As the films marketing company, I would be thrilled that our preview efforts are working. Since so many people are using google to get sneak preview information about the movie, I would make sure that I have a solid online presence (webpage and ad campaign). I also look at these keywords from the viewpoint of a sites like rottentomatoes or 777film. 27 dresses should now be part of their keywords using google ad words. Anyone doing a search for this movie should be presented with an opportunity to purchase tickets online and read reviews on movies. The other popular searches I want to look at is “iphone cases” and “ipod nano accessories”. Both of these terms were in the top 100 search terms for today. This likely means that a lot of people got iphones and nanos for christmas. Great for apple and its shareholders. The other really interesting search term that popped up a lot today was for TomTom.  As with ipods, this must mean that a lot of TomTom GPS units were exchanged this year for christmas.

For those of you that use RSS, google trends has a feed you can subscribe to. I highly recommend it
